Netflix’s new drama series “The Madness” has an exciting concept and a fantastic cast including the incredibly talented Colman Domingo. But does it live up to its potential?
Domingo’s character, Muncie Daniels, is a media analyst who has stumbled upon a crime scene and is locked in the middle of a murder case. As the cops accuse him of murder, Muncie is under pressure to clear his name and discover the truth.
Domingo’s performance is, as always, epic. His performance is complex, nuanced, and charismatic, and he effortlessly handles the show when the story does not work out. His range in the portrayal of emotion – from fear and desperateness to cunning and strength – is a theatrical triumph.
The opening few episodes are gripping and entertaining, but as the season drags on, the narrative slows down. There is uneven pacing, and there are some side-movements that are redundant and not the focus of the story.
Its finale, in particular, is slightly cheesy. It doesn’t have the same intensity or sentimental pull that the series had been preparing for (to speak spoilers).
Even with its shortcomings, “The Madness” still is a fun series to watch, primarily because of Colman Domingo’s stellar performance. If you’re a thriller fan, and you love Domingo, watch this series. Just be ready for some weird action and a weak end.
