Alright, so I just got out of the theater after seeing the new “Superman” (2025) film, and I wanted to share my quick thoughts. Full disclosure: I am not an expert on DC or Marvel films. I wouldn’t claim to be, and I’m certainly not going to deep dive into the genre like some people can. My take on this film is purely based on it being a comic book-themed movie, not compared to other filmmaking genres, because that’s just not where my expertise lies.
I know, by the audience clapping at the end and all the excitement from those still in the theater, that this genre has a huge fan base. I’m just not that person. But here’s the shocker, the surprise: I actually thought it was good.
The “Political” Angle and Why It Worked For Me
There’s been a lot of talk about the politicizing of this film. And honestly? I don’t get the fuss. A lot of these Marvel and DC films are created with societal issues in mind – things going on in the world. This one was no different. It leaned into relevant things, and I was completely here for it. I didn’t think it was in-your-face; it felt like a natural part of the storyline. When you have a story that’s literally about saving the entire world, I think you have to do that. It makes sense.
The Cast: Hits and Near-Misses
Let’s talk about the performances. David Corenswet as Superman? I think he’s wonderful. I’m really digging him in the role. He carries it well.
Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane was great. She was a fantastic Lois Lane here. I was here for her portrayal.
And then Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor… there were some moments where the dialogue felt a bit clunky, as movie dialogue sometimes can be. But overall, I enjoyed his performance. Oh, and I actually liked the dog in it! You know, the four-legged companion that’s become a bit of a staple.
My Rating: 3 Out of 5 for the Genre
So, for this genre of film, I’m giving “Superman” (2025) a 3 out of 5 stars. I was genuinely entertained. The fight scenes were solid. There were some CGI issues with the dog, to me, that were a little wonky, and some of the effects they did were a little off. But the effects on the other characters were fine.
Ultimately, watching it, I felt like I could have been reading a comic book. And for a comic book film, that’s exactly what I’m looking for. So yeah, 3 out of 5. Don’t expect a deep dive from me, but if you’re a fan of the genre or just curious, it’s worth checking out.
