Just caught Ryan Coogler’s “Sinners,” starring Michael B. Jordan as twins who return to their Mississippi hometown in the 1930s. The premise is undeniably original, a new twist on a vampire movie.
The sound design is a standout, almost a character itself. The layering of music, both original and reimagined, alongside other sound elements, was really impressive and added a unique dimension to the experience. Visually, the film is stunning, with beautiful cinematography and color grading.
While the acting was decent across the board, the connection between the twins didn’t quite resonate as strongly as I’d hoped. I also found the romantic chemistry lacking, possibly due to the sheer amount of story being told, leaving less room for those relationships to evolve.
The music is a key component and will likely be a make-or-break for viewers. While I enjoyed it, some may walk away thinking it leans into the “musical” territory. If you’re looking for scares, this isn’t it. Despite the vampire theme, it plays more as an interesting and entertaining story and not so much on the scare tactics. I didn’t mind that at all, I would prefer story over jump scares.
Initially, I considered 3.5/5 stars, but I’m bumping it to 4/5 stars purely for its originality. The ending was a definite highlight and didn’t fall flat. If you’re seeking something different and aren’t afraid of a genre-bending narrative, “Sinners” is worth checking out.
