Action/Comedy Stars Christoph Walz, Cooper Hoffman and Lucy Liu
The Newport Beach Film Festival opened on Thursday, October 17 at Big Newport Cinema with the world premiere of Old Guy, the latest action/comedy feature by British director Simon West, most known for his action films Con Air and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider. Prior to the special screening, festival directors Gregg Schwenk and Todd Quartararo, were presented with a special proclamation from the Newport Beach Chamber.
West was in attendance to introduce his latest movie, filmed in Northern Ireland, followed by a special presentation of the Icon Award to actor Christoph Walz. The Austrian/German actor was clearly humbled and honored to be presented with the prestigious prize.
In the film, aging contract killer Danny Dolinski (Walz) still believes he’s the best at what he does. Stuck at a dead end but vying for the love of spunky club manager Anata (Liu), Danny (Hoffman) is thrilled when The Company pulls him back in the field, but only to train Gen Z newcomer Wihlborg, a prodigy assassin with an attitude. The mismatched pair is asked to eliminate a competing crime syndicate, but uncover their employer’s true motive: removing the old guard in a full takeover. The Company didn’t anticipate that Danny’s experience coupled with the kid’s brilliance would create such an unlikely bond between the two. With Anata’s crucial help, the duo turns it all back on The Company.
Stellar acting by all in the film, especially Oscar winner Walz whose portrayal of Dolinski, the flawed hero, hitman with a heart, was particularly poignant. The chemistry between Walz and Hoffman (Licorice Pizza), as well as Liu, was evident.
Following the screening was a gala opening night party, held at Fashion Island featuring dishes by some of the area’s top dining establishments, alcohol sponsors Tito Vodka and SERIAL wines, and Orange County-based corporate sponsors, including KIA and UCI Health.
Running through October 24th, the Newport Beach Film Festival is one of the largest luxury lifestyle film festivals in the United States. The event brings an internationally curated collection of films and vibrant cultural gatherings to the beautiful Southern California coast. This year marks the festival’s 25th anniversary.
