Hungarian–American filmmaker Marcell Leon has been awarded Best Short Film at the 27th Hollywood Reel Independent Film Festival (HRIFF) for his psychological thriller To Shine Again.

The award was presented on March 7, 2026, during an official ceremony held at the Regal L.A. LIVE cinema complex in downtown Los Angeles, where the multi-day international festival took place.

Founded in 2003, the Hollywood Reel Independent Film Festival is recognized as one of Los Angeles’ established platforms for independent cinema. Dedicated to supporting filmmakers working outside the traditional studio system, HRIFF showcases a diverse range of feature films, documentaries, and short films from around the world.

Following the screening and awards presentation, a private reception brought together members of the American press, film industry professionals, and notable guests who gathered to celebrate Leon’s achievement.

Among the attendees were Australian actress Radha Mitchell, known for her roles in Silent Hill, Pitch Black, and Finding Neverland, and artist Robert Mack. Also in attendance was Grammy Award–winning singer-songwriter Carol Connors, who received an Academy Award nomination for the iconic theme song of Rocky. Actress Dora Kiss, known for her role in Smile and a member of The Actors’ Gang—the renowned Los Angeles theater company founded by Academy Award–winning actor and director Tim Robbins—also joined the celebration. The film’s cast and creative team were present for the occasion.

To Shine Again is a psychological thriller that delves into the complex relationship between the self, the ego, and the inner child. The story follows a man navigating the labyrinth of his own mind, where memories, imagination, and reality begin to blur. As he struggles to break free, he is forced to confront the parts of himself he has long avoided. The film explores themes of identity, trauma, and self-discovery.

The film stars Roman Moretti as Nate, alongside Thompson Sewell as Jon, Rinika Karthikeyan as Alina, and Jimmy Liu Chowdhury as Young Jon.

The project is written and directed by Marcell Leon, who also serves as producer with Litzy Saenz. The creative team includes Director of Photography Gaby Manzanares, Production Designer Bianca Natalia, Composer Natalia Perez, and Supervising Sound Editor Emma-Laure Zietek.
