And she absolutely nailed it.

Fresh Kills stands out as an original mob movie that offers something completely different from its peers. The movie shifts away from typical mobster characters to portray two daughters who grow up under the influence of a powerful mob leader. The film presents an emotional and intimate study of family dynamics shaped by mob life with a special focus on women’s experiences. The film reveals the hidden family code and the effects on ignored family members by rejecting the usual glamorization of mob life found in similar films.
Oscar-Worthy Performances
The actors deliver outstanding performances! Emily Bader and Odessa A’zion absolutely nail their roles. This story becomes even more powerful because of their portrayal of these complex characters while expressing their characters’ depth, struggle, and emotion.
Esposito delivers a powerful performance as Francine, the mother, that combines deep emotion with an authentic portrayal. Annabella Sciorra’s legendary presence in the film delivered an unforgettable performance and was happy to see her on the big screen again.
This independent film would have achieved much more with an increased budget.
This film captured my heart but I constantly imagined its potential if it had received more funding. The movie demonstrates fantastic quality but additional funding could have propelled it over the top giving it tons of accolades I think this story deserved. My regular work with independent filmmakers demonstrates to me how difficult it is to realize a vision without the backing of a studio. As I watched the movie unfold, it kept occurring to me that with additional shooting days or marketing efforts Jennifer could have been able to deliver so much more!
That being said, the film still delivers. Despite budget constraints this indie crime drama achieves excellence through its storytelling and performances paired with expert direction.
